Durkan

The Durkan Group is a long-established developer and construction group with offices in Dublin and London.

The Group's activities comprise construction, estates regeneration, housing, development, and property investment.

Since its formation in 1963, the Group has expanded strategically to meet market demands and now has a turnover approaching £350million from activities centered in London, and Dublin.
With a workforce of 500, a large proportion of Durkan's labour force is directly employed and, therefore, the company is not wholly reliant on subcontractors. This enables them to pursue their commitment to playing a full and active role in training and recruitment, which constitutes an increasingly important part of contracts with their clients.

Currently with some 2750 units in development and a further 4000 units in the planning system, the Groups developments vary from conversions and refurbishment of Listed structures to new build apartments, mixed use and green field developments.

Increasingly schemes are developed in partnership with Housing Associations to provide mixed tenure developments leading to sustainable communities.

Durkan New Homes will sell in excess of 900 new homes this year in over ten different locations in Dublin and London.

Durkan Limited is the longest established Group Company and undertakes construction projects working in the public sector, principally on housing projects for Local Authorities and Housing Associations.  Together with education and healthcare projects turnover this year within Durkan Ltd will exceed £100million.

Typically, contracts range in value from £500,000 up to £25million, and include traditional new build projects, design and build, refurbishments, conversions and major maintenance and repair projects. In addition a Specialist Works Department handles projects of an individual nature priced from £50,000 upwards.

Durkan Limited has welcomed the initiatives being taken by its clients in pursuit of the 'Egan Agenda' and over 90% of current contracts are partnered with its client, consultants and sub-contractors.

Training

Virtually all contracts incorporate training and employ a high proportion of local residents. In addition the Group has an on-going training policy for in-house functions and trade apprentices and is participating in New Deal Initiatives, CITB Careers Awareness Events, Building Work for Women and is a member of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Construction Training Initiative.

Community and Resident Liaison

A speciality of Durkan is working with residents in occupation. In the majority of its contracts with Local Authorities and Housing Associations Durkan works either in occupied dwellings or in close proximity to residents.  This wealth of experience has led to the development of procedures to manage the works with the minimum of disturbance to the residents and with a clear emphasis upon the needs of the residents when working in or around their homes. The company employs a team of Resident Liaison Officers whose sole function is to liaise with residents, paying particular attention to ensuring that a harmonious relationship exists between residents, site staff and operatives and to meeting the reasonable needs and requirements of the residents.
